Why wouldn't he allow elections?
Before he was elected, 5% of the people owned 90% of everything. After he was elected, he confiscated the excessive property and divided it up among everyone.
You may not agree with his tactics or his politics, but to his people he is Robin Hood and as such is in no danger of being elected out of office.
He will have to do some hideously egregious things against his people for their viewpoint to change.

According to the latest, he is trying to re-write the Venezuelan constitution, or do away with it altogether, so he can be presidente-for-life, as I've said he would for years now.
Per the AP story I sourced:
"President Hugo Chavez said that if opposition parties boycott December's presidential election he would call a referendum asking voters to decide whether he should govern Venezuela for the next 25 years."
Did anybody seriously believe he won't seize power for life?

In is already becoming a dictator by nationalizing the Oil companies in his country. Next he said that the media will have the same thing done to them and well and most of the major industries of the country.
