I think Soccer will eventually catch on in the US, no matter how nationalistic we are.. It's just going to take a WHOLE LOT of marketing, television and business savvy to get it there. As far as American football catching on in Europe, the NFL has been doing a LOT to get NFL Europe to become more than a "farm league" for NFL teams.. They have also instituted a program which, starting next year, will bring one NFL regular-season game to Europe every year until 2023, starting with the Giants VS the Dolphins in Wembley Stadium in 2007.

Soccer will eventually become bigger than American Football over in America but American Football will never become really popular over here.
The reason being is that soccer is just so much more accessable to everyone, particularly the new young generation and future young ones. You just need a ball and you can play, you dont even need another player, you can kick against a wall or do kickups or anything. American football, to get a real taste of the game requires so much more.
Of course, the underlying reason soccer will become more popular is because it is a better game!
EDIT, and yes, there is NFL Europe, its not as fast as your NFL but thats to be expected as there are better players over there because of the better wages. Also, they have just arranged for an NFL game to take place this year at our new wembley stadium, I think its going to be Miami (dolphins?) against NY Giants.

Real footbal, the original if you will, is played in two 45 minute halfs, requires tremendous fitness and is cathing on big in the US. American football, where most players run 50 yards and need an oxygen tank, is never going to have the popularity abroad it has in the US. I have played and coached here in the states for over 30 years, on and off, and the game is catching like wildfire.
The recent move of David Beckham to the US is huge. I don't know if his international fan base will follow him though. The MLS is getting better, but can't compare to the international leagues.

Like everything else, it is just a matter of time. Soccer has already made a noticeable change in youth sports in the U.S.
Someone from Europe will have to let you know about American football.

Americans don't have the attention span to spend 90 minutes watching a bunch of guys running up and down a field and never scoring a point. Not sure about American football in Europe.

Nope, one requires skill and strategy, and the other brute strength and the greed of ten thousand thieving despots. Guess which is which?
