If you look at what you really want you will find there is not so much conflict. For example i would rather travel the world playing music and living in poverty than have a great big mansion. I think if i could truly live like that i would be helping everyone else not taking anything away.

Is it an effective, rational use of resources and a good example of fairness? No.
Is it an effective personal survival strategy to be selfish? Absolutely.
Families, gangs, tribes, nations, clubs, ethnic groups, genders - these are all ways to draw the line in the sand between 'us' and 'them'. Even then, behavior is basically selfish. In all cases, looking out for someone else in the same group in the context of 'us' and 'them' is personally beneficial as you also gain from it.
A tribe member that gives some food to another tribe member helps himself as the tribe itself is beneficial to him. Helping someone that is a member if your same nation helps yourself too as that person will be able to contribute more to your nation and you get to share in the rewards.
We use social pressure as a tool to curb this tendency to be selfish by making the social cost of selfishness greater than the personal cost to be fairness.
This is also why the have-nots look like complainers when they talk about social unfairness - they are right, but they are also the ones that would benefit so its selfish at the same time.
The haves respond by pointing out the selfishness rather than acknowledging the truth spoken by the have-nots. Otherwise, they also keep quiet to avoid bringing attention to the unfairness from which they benifit. This is also selfish behavior.
Social pressure is great for maintaining fairness, but is horrible for correcting unfairness. It attempts to create a situation where the most self-serving thing to do IS to be fair - inherently very difficult indeed.

I liken it to a good marriage: In a good marriage each partner need not be concerned about themselves because they both know that the other has in his/her heart to give the best of themselves and seek the others best interest. When we are all looking out for each other, no one is neglected.
Due to selfishness and greed, people have become cold, looking out only for themselves because they know that no one else will. For instance, in the U.S., I can not count on my government to look out for the best interest of its citizens for their primary concern is getting reelected and big business bucks. Countries in African are poor and starving because it's government will not release aid given to it by other nations. The only way to combat this is on a smaller scale - within ones household. In ones household, it is up to the individual to teach and practice living in harmony with others. I guess that's why there are so many problems in the world today because people can't even practice peace in their own homes.

This is a "dog eat dog" world. If we all stop to help little old ladies cross the road then SOMEONE will decide this is a great opportunity to go further be more because they deserve better.
