If your father was successful at it, have HIM train you. That would be the best way to maintain consistency in the business.

first, good for you for stepping up and being a good son.

second, you should definitely listen to what the other folks are saying about learning from your father.

third, almost all small business men are great people but may not be excellent businessmen so it doesn't hurt to read and learn from others.

since you are studying, you don't have time to go somewhere and learn this so I would suggest you start going to small business web sites such as inc.com, quicken.com and the small business section of businessweek.com - there is a lot of great free information about running a successful small business.

No matter what, don't give up your studies. The best thing you can do for your parents and sisters is to study hard, go to college and get a good job or learn to run your father's business even better.

good luck

i would say observe your father closely. before starting on the business independently, assist your father for some time. i hope he is not so unwell that he needs to stop working immediately. you will learn a lot about the business and the way he is managing it. if it is a small business then thats the best way to learn it - and thankfully you still have your father to help you. no outsider can guide you with policies which will work for your business without knowing your business well. also, dont ignore your studies completely. if you keep studying, and complete your education, you can make the business more successful later. work hard and keep your eyes and mind open. all the best.
