I have a large snail and a few dozen of her babies creeping around in my tank, and I've never seen any of them fry themselves yet. It could be your tank is chilly- what is the temperature at? Maybe if you warm it up a little (slowly) he won't try to hide by the heater all the time. Tropical tanks should be between 72-82 F, I keep mine around 80 and my critters are all pretty happy.

You may want to adjust the placement of your heating element. Are you absolutely sure you saw burn marks? Snails tend to go where their is heat and light. It also depends on what kind of snail you have. Apple snails are very hardy, tons of personality and they get pretty big very fast. I'm sure you already know this but snails multiply like crazy. It's not uncommon to have to change the placement of your aquarium. My fiancee has a 50 gallon freshwater in which he keeps discus, catfish and 2-3 different types of snails. He is constantly changing the landscape. See if that helps you.

Depends how hot you have it at. My tank is full of 'em (snails), with a heater there, and they have appeared to be OK.. maybe try turning the heat down a little.
Failing that, perhaps you could get a new heater with more of a protective cover on it.

I used to have the same thing but my snail never burned himself. Did he come into the tank on a plant? Perhaps he's just used to a slightly warmer environment. I wouldn't worry.

the snail feels heat through his "foot" .if he is just getting close to the heater he probably likes it there. if he is on the heater when it turns on again dont worry .it will take a little time to heat up and even at snail speed he should be able to get away (or drop off)

We used to have snails and they would go on the inside of the cover, by the light and lay their eggs on the light fixture. If we didn't exterminate them as eggs they would hatch and we would have dozens of them crawling around the tank. I'm sure the snail goes by the heater for the warmth to hatch eggs.

i take it you're talking about a golden apple snail or something similar in size as the smaller snails are considered as a pest if you are talking about a big snail then i wouldn't worry about it if your snail didn't like it there he wouldn't go there. if you're talking about small snails it's true they will breed like wild fire get yourself a cray fish and he will eat all these but be careful cos if he's not compatible with your fish he'll eat them too

Does it actually get that hot? I used to have a fish that would wedge itself between the heater and the wall and just sit there all day... seemed to like it.

once theyre there you cant really get rid i tend to let them be as they provide extra food for the fish .all i do is pull them out and put them in garden when they get too much .i also check any new plants as this is how they get there in the first place.

Certainly you are alarmed. But i would try turning the temp up a bit. It seems he would like it a bit warmer. Usually a couple degrees will do it!
