Due to complications from a breast reduction, I had to have a nipple surgically reconstructed (simular to what they do for a masectomy). I would love to be able to breast feed for atleast a little while, but because I can only extract milk from one breast, I'm not sure if I will be able to.

Sure you can. But it will make that breast look a bit different than the other one when you wean the child.

Edited to add: My friend breastfed twins, so I'm convinced that one breast can feed one child.

Sure, it happens to women all the time. The only way to keep milk coming into your breast is to feed on that side. Childern often pick one side or the other. That can cause you a problem (size and discomfort) but the child will receive nourishment, either way. One breast doesn't give vita c and the other vita b. Our bodies are much smarter than that. The real thing is to make sure that you are comfortable while you're breastfeeding. The child always feels what you're feeling. Make sure you discuss all options with your Dr.

You should be able to, but the baby might not get enough milk. You may need to supplement. The only other concern I would have is the one you are feeding from might end up bigger than the other side.

I have read that it is best for you to feed from both breasts. but I am sure that your body will compensate for the loss of produtction in one of the other breasts by producing more milk in the other one. But the best advice I can give you is to talk to your doctor I am sure he or she would be able to give you the best answer of all.

Read http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/surgery.html

I would buy a baby scale (like one of these http://www.healthchecksystems.com/babyscales.htm ) so you can make sure your baby is gaining weight. If your doctor won't see the baby untill two weeks after your hospital discharge you can go crazy with worry. Some drs will even let you come in just to weigh the baby.

good luck

When I breastfed, One side produced milk and the other didn't. I never figured out why, but I just continued feeding from one side.

ASK THE DR ABOUT THAT, I KNOW THAT IF YOU NURSE ON ONE SIDE MORE THAN THE OTHER THAN THAT SIDE WILL MAKE MORE THAT THE OTHER. HOWEVER IM NOT SURE ONE BREAST CAN MAKE ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO SATISFY BABY WITHOUT HAVING TO SUPLIMENT FORMULA
