Unfortunately I don't think there will be much of a difference. As a Cuban-American I can only hope that things would change for the better but I just don't see it.

There will be no immediate change. 48 years years have passed since the present regime took over. It's not unlike the situation that existed in Iraq when and where Saddam ruled for 27 years. The autocratic, communist system is inculcated into the populace and only a major uprising (unlikely) or an international invasion (possible) would rescue the population from the oppression under which they live. The US could embrace Cuba and help it become the 52nd State in the union

Want the truth? Here it is:

1) His brother will seek to continue the Cuban way of the last 45 years. There will be widespread support of that by the people actually living in Cuba. Half of Miami will protest for a return to the 1950s.

2) I am sure if this happens on Bush's watch, which appears likely, he'll try to play the bully of the block yet again by forcing another country to do what whim directs him it should do.

It's good to be """The Decider""".

As I posted elsewhere:

What WILL happen? Hugo Chavez will try and make a play for Cuba. He will present himself as a continuation of Castro, all the time using his intimidation tactics to keep people in line, making dissenters "disappear".

What SHOULD happen? Cubans should embrace democracy and elect a leader that can help them establish a government that can reconcile itself with the world at-large (not just a few countries here and there).

In the short term limited introduction of a market economy, limited political liberalisation. In the longer term the introduction of reforms similar to China - ie Socialism with Cuban characteristics.

I don't know, but I'm hoping that Raul Castro is more open to reforms and that he's not a Stalinist.
