Britain without any doubt. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Oasis, The Smiths, U2 and many many more. The USA has been stifled due to the mainstream crap played on the radio, but finally they look as they are going somewhere. The Killers, The White Stripes, The Strokes , Rapture, The Gossip etc. All these American bands have been greatly influenced by great UK bands, and its good to see that USA can come up with the goods to compete with the British. Competition is always healthy, as this creates a drive to do better.

It's a close one but Britain has to take it in terms of bands -The US has produced some fantastic artists, but just for the sheer number of great and influential artist's that have come out of Britain, it has to number one.

But then if you take into account the totally awesome hip hop that has come out of the US, that may be enough to bring about a tie?! depending on what standing hip hop has in your life really (I would consider R&B but that's clearly not a valid artform given that it's rubbish).

Im British and I would say the US. If you dig beneath the layer of massively hyped bands there are more diverse and interesting bands there than in the UK. Maybe its just the US has a bigger population. Has the UK produced the equvalent of Nirvana, the Meat Puppets or the pixies, no. We had the rather lame Britpop at the time. The US produced Elvis. What did we have....Cliff Richard! Case Closed.

The United Kingdom.

That's not to say the U.S. hasn't produced great bands but Britain has a higher ratio of good bands in my opinion.

GREAT Britain!
The Beatles, The Stranglers, The Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Who.

But have you noticed that all answers stating GB have got thumbs down? Why? Is the asker offended?

Britain...as in the US bands have to be more Mass Market in order to get a deal.

Also US radio only plays middle of the road stuff so kids grow up listening to rubbish and so have no role models to emulate...it stiffles creativity

I could be patriotic and say Britain, but most of my favourite bands are American. If you're discussing music that has had the most influence and break throughs, Britain, of course, and technically our bands are more impressive since there's so many of them, and such a low population in comparison.

So, by ratio alone, UK, always.

A difficult one this............ MY opinion is that Britain has produced some great bands, and the usa some great songwriters.
Now hows that for sitting on the fence.
