I don't know about Canada, but most places in the U.S. have an "exchange" policy if you don't have a receipt. You can't get your money back but you can exchange for the same item (hopefully a non-defective one, this time)

This is why I love Costco!

First of all, did you use a credit card to pay for the appliance? If so, maybe the retailer you bought it at keeps records of the purchase and can return or exchange it for you. If they dont keep records, you could try to print out your credit card statement online and show it to them. Every credit card transaction comes with a transaction #, so I dont see why you couldnt call their Customer Service line, tell them your problem, and give them this transaction #.

As a last resort, I would consider disputing the charge with your credit card company, citing the reason that you bought a defective product that they wont give you an exchange on. Let your credit card company argue the case for you.

Go ahead. Politely request them. They will surely oblige you. Dont have any doubt. They are also human and definitely not your enemy inclined to hurt or harm you in any way.

No not usually. But you can probably exchange it for another one.
