That's part of the charm. You kinda know that it's really cheesy and fake, but you just get into the extreme storylines and they draw you in. They have themes that women tend to like, the romance, the drama, the guys.
And really, the same exact question could be asked about wrestling. I've said that wrestling is like a soap opera for boys.

I like soap operas....Not all of them though. Days of our lives is a good one, its been on tv for a really long time. And I like passions but that one is kinda cheesy but its entertainment...

I don't watch them because I have A JOB, but as I understand, the appeal is that you can miss the show for months at a time, watch two episodes on your vacation and be completely caught up.

I think that most people start watching because of one particular character or story line. Then eventually, imperceptibly it becomes a habit.

I agree with you, they are the lowest form of intellectual stimulation right next to infomercials.

Its the same stories getting rehashed every year. There will be a wedding, a murder investigation and a divorce/affair.

I also can't understand it. Maybe that's their only form of entertainment. It's shallow, I know, but everyone has his/her interests and maybe it's in this type of shows that they find their "true entertainment". It's pathetic for their part, but that's the reality.

Because they're so ridiculous is what makes them fun. They are an escape from reality.
