Do you look nice? Always smile? Act like you actually like your job and are not there for the money? Do you act like you actually care about your customers? Do you make sure their glasses are never empty? Do you just refill water, iced tea or coffee without saying a word and interrupting a conversation? Can you tell them about the specials or answer questions about what's in certain dishes, or recommend something?

You just have to act like you've known these people your whole life and you're just helping them out.

SMILE!

I don't like a chatty server. Be friendly and respectful but remember why you are there. I just want to eat my dinner. I want it served the way I ordered it and I don't want my conversations constantly interupted. Keep my glass full and used dished cleared off. It is ok to check back to see I have any further needs but don't invite yourself into my life by conversing with me. I know this sounds stuck up but a good server stays in the background but is there when needed. Look for my signals. Check through your station regularly for the customer trying to make eye contact with you and respond immediately. I always tip a responsive server more generously than the minimum 15%.

The best way to get tips is to offer the best service with out intruding on the guest. Be friendly but do not over step. Any good server can start to see when someone is finishing up or ready to order so look for those clues and try and get to the customer when they hit that point. Anticipate their needs.

I have previous experience as a server. The best way to ensure good tips is to always SMILE SMILE SMILE. If you smile it carries over into your attitude and your personality will SHINE !!! If you notice a couple try to give them their space but be attentive. If it's a family with children visit frequently and leave extra napkins.Always pay extra attention to the children. With mom and dads permission a special treat for the children help as well. Good Luck with your tips....oh, I almost forgot...never let cups empty...never serve cold food...and double check all orders before you serve them. While it may be the cooks fault that something is missing....you are the one who pays for their mistakes. :-)

As a server you need to be able to read the personalities of your guests.
Every table could be different.
In time you will be able to do this and it can really work to your benefit.
