I've had great success with this trap in my house:

It’s also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I’m not a big fan of PETA):

I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:

http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp

If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. Also, if you use the live traps outside, put some bedding (torn-up paper towels or cotton balls) inside the trap so the mice won't freeze to death during the night. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. If you are a kind person, you might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them.

Just so other people know, the absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.

Thanks for wanting to be kind to the mice. Good luck!

The owl answer almost had it right. If you put plastic owls around the outside of your house mice won't come near. Closing any openings they may use to come in will help also. A mouse doesn't need a very big opening at all to get inside your house.

The machines that make the high pitched sound don't really work too well as the mice will adapt to it in a matter of time. The best way is to trap them in a box trap, which doesn't kill them. You can then place them outside to run away.

clean area you know is affected.

you can find that the mice will chew corners off of food and/or plastic bags containing food, so for starters: keep the food in sealed containers.

also, you can define the affected area (or their trail to/back from their hideout) by the "droppings" (poop) - small black/dark brown pieces of poop usually smaller than a grain of rice (if they are bigger, then you may have a rat problem)

once you find the hole(s), stuff them with steel-wool.

helpful tip: you may want to sprinkle a thin (oh, so thin) layer of flour on the floor (near the walls) before you go to sleep. the mice will leave footprints and you will have a trail to the hole(s).

also, a small (non electric) mechanical mouse trap will catch the mouse near its hideout (if you don't want them in your walls)

You might want to call an exterminator. They don't actually have to go to your house or wherever, you could just ask them.
