silicon-
A nonmetallic element which is only found as a compound with other elements in nature. When artificially extracted, silicon appears as a dark brown amorphous powder, or as a dark crystalline substance with a metallic luster. This substance is used in combination with other materials in glass, semiconducting devices, concrete, brick, refractories, pottery, and silicones. ...

Carbon-
Carbon, the sixth most abundant element in the universe, has been known since ancient times. Many natural substances of base materials are used to make carbon. The most common of these are wood, coal, lignite, and coconut shell. Amorphous carbon is formed when a material containing carbon is burned without enough oxygen for it to burn completely.

(1) Carbon has 2 principal energy levels (with filled s orbitals, partially-filled p orbitals, and empty d orbitals), while silicon only has 2 (with filled s orbitals and partially-filled p orbitals).

(2) Carbon has 6 protons and 6 electrons, while silicon has 14 protons and 14 electrons.

(3) Carbon is a nonmetal, while silicon is a metalloid.

silicon differs from carbon because they are two different things, like silicon is a tree, and carbon is a horse.

Looking at your question from a different angle...

Carbon has the ability to catenate (form long chains with itself), which some use to explain why C is a good foundation for biological materials, and hence, life.

Silicon has repulsive forces that prevent catenation, and therefore, even though it has the same coordination number and geometry.
