I think so. If its a stern voice you know you're in some sort of trouble, if your whole name is yelled you know you're in a ton of trouble. That being said the speed, attitude and demeanor which you respond with is going to be affected by the way you're expecting to be dealt with based of the tone of voice. Same goes for the general calling of the name. You can usually tell if your parent just has a question or is going to want you to do something. This will, again, alter your response.

I think so. My kids know when I'm calling them for a reason other than when they are in trouble. When I'm upset they have a look on their face that asks, "What did I do?" before they even see me and they hesitate. They know if I'm scared or worried and they come running and they know the tone of voice when they are going to get something or go somewhere.

of course it does , my sister never shouts at her kids and i was at a loss to understand how she kept them under control , she explained that she would ask them to do as she bid twice if she got no response she asked again in a harsh tone both kids know that a smacked bottom follows that tone and so do as they are bid .
amazingly both kids have only once ever actually been smacked , she says it hurt her more than them but she had to make sure they would remember .

yes, if i call my daughter in a cheeky playfully way, she turns to look at me with a smile on her face.
If i call her name in my "mummy's not happy" tone, she ignores me!
