Honestly, I think a BIG percentage of people who frequently log online suspend their disbelief. From what I've seen and even experienced in the past for a brief moment, many allow themselves to live in a 'dreamworld', refusing to see reality for what it is. Look at someone who meets a person online and chats to them for awhile, there may be a few red flags thrown up by something they say, how they react in their wording, but the person chooses to ignore it because they want to continue living in their fantasy world.(Because, like you said, it may be fun for them or they get something out of it.) That's my take on your question.
