The definition for "seed" used by the NFL means: rank or position.

It's the same word they use in Tennis. When they go into a tennis match all of the players are seeded with regard to their world ranking at that time. That decides who they play. NFL does the same thing. The team with the best record gets the #1 seed and a first round bye and home field advantage throught the playoffs.
