I have a linksys router with LAN ports on the back of it. My dsl modem has a standard telephone socket. How can I configure my computer to act as a gateway to enable other PC's to connect to the internet?

1. run the network wizard, say you connect straight to internet, other computers get their internet from you. choose internet connection and the output you want to share it through.

2. (manual) share the internet connection. in network connections, right click, sharing, share. then right click the lan icon, set the ip to something like 192.168.0.1, subnet to 255.0.0.0. then log in to the router and make sure that it has its gateway as 192.168.0.1 (your computer) and assign it its own IP, like 192.168.0.2.

Prob easier if you just do option one, considering you asked the question. sorry, i go off on these rants sometimes. any problems, try 2. any more problems: rykkers@hotmail.com

EDIT: to reply to the post below, i assumed that he was using a USB modem, otherwise yes he could just hook the modem up to the router.

First posting is correct....

But is that what you really want to do? If other people are using your computer as a gateway, the computer will drag.

What you probably whould do is just have each of the PCs connect directly to router, with the router attached to the modem. Then they will not be using your PCs resources to talk to the Internet.
