I forget the technical term, but it is considered a defense mechanism where the individual either consiously or subconsiously replaces their inner feelings that are socially unexceptable into an exceptable excercise or habit. For example, I have a friend, who for years delt with everything from getting a hang nail to his relationship problems with exploding and usually getting physical with someone or something. After channeling his aggresion into UFC fighting, he is making money, doing something he enjoys, and leaving that aggresion in the ring. Like I said, some people make this decision consiously and others do not, they simply do activities to hide or displace their feelings that aren't deemed socially exceptable. And most of you are right also, when you say some are just plain adrenaline junkies.....some people just really enjoy that rush of endorphines.

Any form of sport done in moderation that is safe is very good for working out all sorts of emotions. In this case, perhaps the person(s) are looking to work out frustration or may be seeking a lift from plain old fashioned boredom. A very constructive way to work out aggressions or to tidy up frustration levels.

i train for fighting and i love it. after a full day of work and i get home and change/ relax, i drive myself 20 miles to work out and get beat up 4 days a week but i love it. Its like that quote from fight club, "once you fight, everything else gets the volume turned down"

I'm sure it is the same for other aggressive activities. its not so much that i like being hit, but its the confidence that comes from knowing what your capable of, its just a rush.

Aggression is a part of nature if we didn't have it we wouldn't have survived this long. With no outlet for sex and aggression most teen boys would probably shoot up their schools
