A great question!! I am making the assumption you are talking about self discipline... Not punitive discipline. In the case of self discipline the tasks in life that are meaningful and important are rarely easy and often fraught with hardships. self discipline is a very important factor to persevere through the task to discharge the responsibility to complete it.

Discipline is all about self-control. A well-known man named Sigmund Freud says that the human self has inner animal drives which serve a selfish pleasure-seeking principle. I would say that that is what discipline is trying to control. When one disciplines one's self, the inner animal is not entirely suppressed but controlled and balanced with the expected ideals dictated by one's socio-cultural environment. We can't just do anything we want to do due to direct and indirect restraints.

Let me illustrate this in a situation. Imagine that you are a single man and you see this beautiful femme fatale across the street. You are definitely attracted to her. Because you are attracted to her, it does not mean that you can just go to her straight away and do the "deed" right at the very place. No. This is due to the controlling effects of discipline that is dictated by the morals and standards of one's environment.

Free will and rational thinking is what separates us from animals. Dogs can "do it" on the street whereas we humans generally do not. We have a "conscience" (that contains social standards embedded in us through our education, religion, or other social structures) that guide is in what is "good" to do and what is "bad" to do. Animals' actions are already biologically pre-determined or pre-programmed as such and we humans are considered to be more superior beings due to the gifts of free will and rational thinking which are guided by a set of standards.

If we would have no discipline. We would do whatever we want! We would only think about the fun stuff and not about the things that we REALLY have to do! If nobody had discipline, the whole world would be a total chaos!

Discipline teaches us that there are consequences for our actions and it teaches us responsibility. It makes us strong individuals and gives us morals to grow up by. It makes it so we know the difference between right and wrong. Think about this: what would happen if everyone just ran around and did anything they felt like doing with no consequences at all to worry about. The world would be an even scarier place than it is now!

Because without it, I wouldn't even get out of my nice big cozy warm bed with my 4 dogs all hugging and kissing me and acting so glad to see me rolling around and petting them and rubbing tummies, OH WHAT WAS THE SUBJECT?? (I love my dogs tooooooo much) Discipline, or rather the lack thereof, is responsible for at least a billion people's personal failures!!! I'm getting sleepy zzzzzzz BUT SELF-DISCIPLINE IS WHAT WE NEED MOST IN MY---------OUR--------- LAZY LIVES.
Good Luck with the better answers above me!!! (good question!!) @8=)

Without it, things wouldn't progress except through force, probably out of necessity or in recovery from the consequences of the lack of it.
Discipline forms routines and laws that transform into creed and habit which keeps humanity striving forward, good or bad. If not for discipline, we'd still be living in caves and trees.

Disipline at home, at school, growing up in general, depicts the type of person you will be in adulthood.
With out it, you have no guidelines to follow in life and can loose direction. Disipline is a fact of life and better learnt as a child. As adults, in the work place it is required, in the home it is required, self disipline is needed to pursue tasks in all areas.
Healthy disipline is a good thing I feel.
