Okay.... So After the MLK holiday, so far all I've heard was "Martin Luther King saved our lives....What our poor ancestors were put through by white people"....blah blah blah.... But how come Abraham Lincoln is NEVER spoken of or praised by "black" people? Do they not want to recognize that a WHITE man is the one that stopped slavery? MLK did not FREE slaves, he just spoke up for black people, which is an awesome thing, he made a great impact on the way black people live today, but if it wasn't for WHITE Abe Lincoln, they might still be slaves to this day. Also, How is it NOT racisit for there to be a black only college, black month, tv channel, etc. but if whites did, it would be racisit? What if us "crackers" say "Hey! They have their only college, why can't we?" How would that be any different?

I really appreciate everyone's answers, I'm not racists, I just like hearing different opinions, and Gomar, you say for me to blame our ancestors.... fine, true... I think slavery was horrible and with blacks being separated, was a sad thing too, but please....if us whites need to blame our ancestors, how about tell "black" people to stop blaming everything they do wrong on it being because of their race. example: "IS IT BECAUSE IM BLACK?" "IF I WAS WHITE IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT" etc. That gets really old.

and yes, we may possibly own things over black like you all say the BET, and etc, but my point is, how come black people are allowed to call it BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION, OR NATIONAL ***** FUND? What would happen if we called CMT WHITE COUNTRY MUSIC? or Had the NATIONAL WHITE FUND? Would that be racist?

First lets deal with the "only" statements. It is not only racists but unfortunate that any "only" Establishments exist, however, the white males of the world did to ourselves. We held everyone down for so long that it will still be decades maybe even another century before there is a true sense of equality in America.

As long as white males hold power, and they don't change, there will continue to be some unequality. However, once we are no longer in power it will be the whites that will eventually find themselves in the minority and in need of "only" establishments. What we truly need is for everyone to close their eyes and see each other as human, not color, ethenicity, culture, religion, sexual orientation, or sex.

Good luck with these problems future generations cause we have done our best to fu*k the situation up so bad it will take some serious contributions and compassion from all sides.

And now for the other part of your question. Legally Abe didn't free the slaves in the south what he did was make it illegal to own slaves in the US. When the south lost and got reabsorbed into the US the law freed the slaves. His intent was never to free the southern slaves, but to end the controversy in the remaining northern states. However, since his goal was to get the union back together he knew that if he was successful slavery would end.

Anyone know that Abe defended the rights of a slave owner to retrieve his slave who had run across a state border? this was fought all the way to the Supreme Court and Abe won. The slave returned to his owner.

Definitely Martin Luther King.

1. Abe didn't "free" slaves altruistically, he did it to garner support for the north, and get slaves to join the northern armies

2. due to rapid modernization at the time, slavery in the south was soon becoming economically infeasible anyway, and slaves would have freed themselves, which would have been better for blacks in the long run

3. MLK was not a god. he was a man.

4. that same old argument. whites had MTV for years. MTV now owns BET, so it's not a black channel anyway. it is not for blacks, by blacks, as you can see by the images on tv. whites have historically white colleges- places like BATES, which had FOUR black people, all immigrants actually. and Historically black colleges are not "black only". whites and other nationalities are free to go, and often get scholarships if they choose to. i agree, black history should be entwined in American history, thus removing the need for one month.

edit: and i use Bates, not becaues it's a racist school (it's not, it's great) but because it shows that it is white because blacks tend to not know about it or want to be stuck in maine, just as HBCU are not more black becuase whites don't want to go or be stuck in wherever

Poor Amber,

Your question has been asked millions of times and answered millions of times, and I'm tired of answering it. Please Please read your history books, your only embarrassing yourself for asking a question like this.
But i guess i will a little bit.
The War was the same as the majority of all wars...about MONEY..
Abe said himself when blacks initially wanted to join the forces "This war has nothing to do with Blacks"
Without MLK Jr. we would still have to use separate water fountains, along with hundreds of stupid Jim Crow type laws.
There are no such thing as Black Only Colleges, There are historically Black Colleges and their doors were never closed to whites and have always had white professors on staff. White people rarely go, because they don't want to be the minority. Hmm.. Funny that. The reason for the schools were because there were WHITE ONLY SCHOOLS!
And how often did you study black history in school Amber? Probably not as much as white history. I'm 27 and i know people my age who never even heard of Jesse Owens. A True American Hero. That's why we have a black history month. If you paid attention you wouldn't ask a question like this.
And the same goes for BET, which is of course owned by white people.
I don't mean to sound bitter, but its frustrating knowing people think like you do. Don't worry, your not the only one, however, that is the sad part. Millions think like you do. I hope i helped in some way just now.
God bless.

Lincoln wasn't the black "friendly" person he has been made out to be. After the war between the states he said let the slaves be free but keep them in the south as we don't want them up here. That is why they were given 40 acres and a mule, so they would want to stay in the south. MLK had a great vision and if you look at it without racist glasses you will see it wasn't for black people only. It was a vision for all people.

My friend you are right, MLK was a great man but by saying he only spoke for the black peoples is to minimize his words. He spoke for oppressed peoples, that means black, yellow, red, white, or purple. That is what made him great. In the context of his time he did indeed speak for the black man/women but I think his message is bigger than that. As for A. Lincoln he was the figurehead of the end to slavery, but slavery was fast becoming economically unfeasible and would have died out on its own as the industrial revolution was about to begin in earnest. The Civil War was not about slavery but about state's rights and economics.

Honest Abe would be rolling in his grave if he could see what his emancipation proclaimation has done to this country . How can it not be racism when a black teen and a white teen from the same neighborhood apply for college scholarships , and the black teen with a lower GPA is accepted before the white teen . I totally agree with you on the black month , tv network , and black only colleges . We whites need to re-claim our heritage and fight for our human rights !!

THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR BET(WHITE OWNED) OR
BLACK HISTORY(SHORTEST MONTH)
BLACK COLLEGES PAY TAXES TOO.
DON'T GET MAD AT US, GET MAD AT YOUR ANCESTORS.

YOUR TRYING TO MAKE WHITE PEOPLE THE VICTIM AND YOU SOUND STUPID.
