Skraelings! You're talking about the norse who crossed the Atlantic to the Americas, right? Of course, the norse called it 'Wineland', their semi-mythical land of plenty. You know, they found a plaque in nordic runes in America, and when they translated it, they found that vikings had claimed the country as their own long before other Europeans got there. Fantastic...

Okay, so that priest of Odin knows more about vikings than I do... what am I going to do? re-write my answer? No, never... I got here before him, we'll see who gets the points.

The term they used was SKRAELINGS. Roughly translated into modern English it means "Ugly Men." In truth is was a term that was applied to ANY foreigners they encountered (Mediteranian, Asian, Middle Eastern, African) as well as the Native peoples in the Americas (Vinaland, Markland). It is a term that some modern followers of the ancient gods use to designate those of the Christian religion.

As an aside it is a common miscomception that the term Vinland translated as Wineland. That was born of a misinformed Latin translator who assumed the prefix "Vin" was realted to the latin "vino" for wine and was a referance to grapes. In reality the Norse term "vin" actualy translates as "pasture" and thus Vinland was actually "Pasture land" and not Wineland as has been assumed by those that are unfamiliar with Norse language.

The Indians were not so called at that time. They were called Indians when the first Europeans thought they had found India.
