bill russell was a winner in grade school, high school, college and the nba....maybe its because he belongs to the era long time past but these people who think of others as the greatest never bother to look up russell's winning accomplishments.... and to those of you who chose chamberlain, you might want to check how russell dominated their encounters to wilt's frustration and you have the gall to choose wilt over rusell...and remember michael jordan did not win his first title until he was six years in the league and bird, magic and kareem were fading or away from the battles....11 rings in 13 nba campaigns says it all and he even played in 12 finals....no player ever has ever achieved 12 finals in 13 seasons and to say no one will ever again is a safe bet....being great should never be about personal records, flashy plays, or scoring many points...it should be about winning and there is no bigger winner than the great Bill Russell

This can never be answered as you really can not compare players of different generations as the game has changed so much over the years. For example. . in the modern era you might choose Michael Jordan. . .however. . . .Thirty years ago. . . Michael Jordan wouldn't have been allowed to palm the ball or travel on every other play as the game allows you to today. Todays players also are much different physically as training and nutrition have evolved to make them stronger and more athletic. Injuries are recovered from much more quickly. Also. . . in todays game. . with all the hype and the press . . superstars are completely babied and catered to . . . for example. . . Larry Bird, Julius Erving, Magic Johnson and yes. . .even Michael Jordan all were given special treatment by the officials who allowed them to travel, foul, and go to the free throw line much more than the so called lesser or non big name players. Larry Bird was a great player but all he had to do was fall down and the officials called a foul and put him on the free throw line! Today. . . NBA players are allowed to travel and carry the ball on every play!!! They also commit fouls on every single play and are really only called for them in the last two minutes. College basketball is far better than the NBA because they actually play basketball and not rugby! The NBA has deteriorated into a group of gangster scumbucket overly tatooed jewelery wearing thugs who can dunk and nothing else. Even Shaquille O Neal is very limited in his skills. He is tall and big and really nothing else. His offensive moves consist of a dunk and a put back dunk or tip in and nothing else. Can you imagine how dominant he could have been if he ever developed a turn around jump shot like Patrick Ewing of Akeem Olajuwan? For Gods sake he's been playing basketball for 20 years and can't even shoot a free throw!!!! That is pathetic!!! Todays players get too much money too fast and become complacent. That is one characteristic of Michael Jordan that was amazing. . . he was the best but still worked harder than anybody!!!

I've put together a list of numbers of some of the greatest of all time. However, closer looks reveal that while Wilt Chamberlin and Bill Russel had almost idencial stats minus the 15 pts per game, it should be noted that Bill played Wilt almost every year in the championship series, and Bills Celtics won 10 titles, including 9 straight. He was a 5 time MVP, 12 time allstar. He once had 52 rebounds in one game, and 49 in 2 others. He also won an olympic gold medal. These accolades lead me to believe, he was the greatest player ever to lace up a set of converse all-stars and step onto the hardwood.

Wilt Chamberlins Career Stats - 30.1 pts, 22.9 rb, 4.4 ast
Michael Jordans Career Stats - 30.1 pts, 6.2 rb, 5.3 asst
Larry Bird Career Stats - 24.3 pts, 10 rb, 6.6 asst
Oscar Roberston Career Stats - 25.7 pts, 7.5 rb, 9.5 asst
Kareem Abdul Jabbars Stats - 24.6 pts, 11.2 rb, 3.2 asst
Magic Johnson Career Stats - 19.5 pts, 7.2 rb, 11.2 asst
Jerry West Career Stats - 27 pts, 5.8 rb, 6.7 asst
Bill Russel Career Stats - 15.1 pts, 22.5 rb, 4.3 asst

Michael Jordan. With little surrounding star talent besides Scottie Pippen, he led them to 6 championships. A great leader, great person, great player. Enough said.

The Big O-Oscar Robertson, Russell, Wilt, Magic, Jerry West, Kareem, Larry Bird. I would take any of them as first pick on my team. They were all great.
