My son has a bit of a cough, it's sounds like there may be some phlem in his throat, and it sounds like his cough is bothering him a little bit, I was wondering if there was any over the counter cough medicine I can give him to calm his cough down? He's 7 months (almost 8) We have a doctors appointment, but it's not for a couple of days and I want to help him out with his cough, just wondering if anyone else has used a cough medicine that helped their baby.
Thanks everyone!

I prefer not to use cough medicines. Run a vaporizer in the room where baby spends most of its time. Run a hot shower in the bathroom with the door shut and take baby in there so he can breath in the steam. Moisture will help to losen the cough. After he has drank milk or formula, offer him water to help rinse the milk. Milk clings to the throat and can produce more coughing. Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids, especially water and juice. GL

We have used PediaCare decongestant and Robitussin DM...all with pediatrician advice. I personally don't like PediaCare decongestant b/c it made my son a huge space cadet. But the Robitussin worked wonderfully!

Also, don't be surprised to see a little mucus in his diaper. If he does have cough up some phlem, most likely he will swallow it.

My daughter's doc gave her a prescription for Robitussin DM. She said that it's the only cough medicine you should give a child at that age and only the DM formula. Hope this helps.

NO! Don't give him anything! Read this website first--"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned parents not to give common over-the-counter cold remedies to children under 2 years old without consulting a doctor."

For my 8-month-old we use Triaminic Cold and Cough. There is a list at the link below of dosing for kids by weight.

When my daughter was that age we used pediacare, but I would most definitely call the doctor and let them know his condition and discuss dosing. Always get medical advice when they are that young... I hope he feels better soon...
