Merely as a point of reference to your perspective as they try to answer questions.
And to the other answerer , yes you can have friends on websites! And no, it is not because they will like you better if you are American. At least not for the majority of us. People just want to understand the askers point of reference when sometimes a question might seem unusual to someone living in the states.

It seems that everyone is always asking me if I am from England. I talk and type like an English person, so everyone thinks I am English. But in reality, I'm not! *shhh* Don't tell! lol

Geographical reasons, also marketing purposes. They want to know as much as possible about the people on their system to pitch items to make money. Advertisement basically.
