Neo-conservative has been used several times throughout history... the most recent was during the Reagan administration to describe the new converts to the conservative fold, traditional moderates and even liberals who espoused responsible spending and family values.
Frequently the use of neo-con to describe Republicans is often misplaced because many of those being described as neo-cons, such as Cheney, are traditional conservatives. Since the "Reagan Democrats" have been purged from the Democratic party the term neo-con is usually a sign of ignorance.
The term neo-lib, is a legitimate political phrase, originally used to describe the wave of socialism that swept Europe in the 1970's. Unlike traditional European socialism which led to a totalitarian or authoritarian state neo-liberalism was democratic socialism.
American neo-liberalism is just that, democratic socialism, the term has been in use by economists for over a decade. So technically it wasn't made up on Answers, but it being used more popularly to describe the socialist leanings of the Democratic party.

Neo-Con is not a made up word. They are a lot different from Conservatives. The Neo-Cons control the Republican Party today. Let me explain the differences:
A true conservative does not want to get involved in foreign entanglements. The Conservatives has no use for the United Nations, NATO , the World Bank, the IMF, NAFTA or GATT. We favor national sovereignty. We believe that Americans should control our foreign trade, not an international agency. We believe that the only time US troops should be in combat is in a declared war. We don't do other peoples dirty work.
The Conservative wants limited government. The Neo-Con wants efficient Big Government. The Neo-Cons admire FDR, whereas the Conservatives despise him.
Both Bushes are Neo-Cons. Pat Buchanan and I are Conservatives. For more information on the Conservative positions, check out: www.jbs.org.

My old friend...neo-con aka Neoconservatism has been around for centuries..( must have been made up by some really old liberal ).never heard of neo-lib. So you don't mind the fact that your country tortures people...later released as they had done nothing wrong...do you understand that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11 ???? I wonder...even your leader Shrub admits this. So realize this you would have made a good Nazi.

I prefer Neo-Democrat, to describe Democrats who don't have the patriotic, America-first, anti-communist toughness that was seen in many of the pre-70's Democrats, like JFK (the real one, not the poseur kerry) or Truman.
The Neo-Dem would completely disagree with JFK's "Ask not what your country can do for you..." belief. The Neo-Dem president Clinton's irresponsibility was a polar opposite of Truman's "The Buck stops here" attitude of accountability.
That's how I see it.

As a Republican, I would like to take credit for making up both words. One of which is a compliment and one of which is an insult.
The funny thing is, Liberals will say that a NEO LIB is a compliment.
We like to take credit for things that frustrate and enrage liberals.

Neocons call themselves neocons to distinguish themselves from other cons when it comes to stuff like nation building.
Neoliberalism is actually a real thing, however it refers to Thacherism and Reaganomics of the 1980s that pushed government controls like tariffs and the like away from the marketplace. It later developed into globalism and is actually a very conservative ideology.

Too much TV, talk radio and time on our hands. It has come down to name calling now. This accomplishes nothing, other than to make the name caller feel smart. Name calling and label swapping are one of the many last resorts of those with no real intelligent arguments.

Liberals didn't coin the word neocon, conservatives did. Neocons are social conservatives, which are not conservatives in the classic sense. Classic fiscal conservatives, like myself, don't like being grouped with that ideology.

Actually, neoconservatives made up the word themselves. Buuut, in reality, they are closer to liberals than being true conservatives, so it's understandable.
I can't wait for the hippie generation to "slip the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God"... if you know what I'm sayin'.
Hope this helps.
