I've re-read many of the old classics and loved them, but I just can't get through "Moby Dick". (Although Queequeg (sp) is an interesting character.)

Go ahead and read old "Dopey Mick" again. If you really want to, you can skip all the chapters about kinds of whales, or different types of knots, or different shapes of harpoons, etc. I don't believe that you will be required to know which whale produces the greatest amount of oil for ladies' makeup. Although you could find that information very educational, you can skip it. Melville is pretty good about telling you when he has a chapter coming up on unusual hats worn by seamen. . .

You're gonna need to get into education as a major and then focus on elementary education and from there depending on the school you pick to go to you will have to let them know what you want to do. Most likely you'll end up having to take courses in sign language as well so you need to look for a college that has what you want to do. When considering what college make sure to call and talk with advisors who work at the school of education and see what they can help you with. I did this when I was considering being a business major, I called every college I wanted to attend and then saw what program looked the best for me. Now in education, I strongly recommend doing that so that you get what you want. Good luck!

I have finished reading Moby Dick, but only once. I just cannot get into it a second time.

I loved "Moby Dick." But it sounds like you gave it a good try. I tried again and again to read "Catcher In the Rye," which I hear is great, but I just couldn't get into it. I couldn't get into "Pride and Prejudice" either.
Try again in a few years; "Moby Dick" really is a great book.

I have read Moby Dick several times in my life and I enjoy each time. Many of the classics are enjoyable time after time, that is why they are deemed classics.

Its just so long and sort of boring. If you've read enough to get a good sense of the characters and have your own interpretation than just put the book down and read a description of the ending online. You've tried and maybe can get back to it one day. You may also just make yourself read five pages every night and eventually it will be done.

Do yourself a favor and read the book. It is on the short list of the best works of literature ever written.

I agree that reading the book is a bit of a chore, but it is worth it.

I did...I never had to read it for school....I am from new england and always had a big fascination with the ocean and old time whalers. It wasn't easy....Melville isn';t easy to read no matter what book of his you choose...but, after a while it toook on its own rhythm and I finished it. I will never forget it...

Well, I've got an old copy somewhere in my library. I'll have to pull it out again. I probably had it for school assignment long ago....
