I'm serious. Has anyone noticed how many people don't know the difference between "your" and "you're," and don't know that you NEVER pluralize something with an apostrophe? If we can't comprehend simple concepts like these, what business do we have insisting that people who immigrate to this country learn English? We can't even communicate in that language properly ourselves!

I agree that we cannot demand that foreigners in this country speak proper English (as their second language) and so many "natives" haven't even mastered it as their first language!
I have heard the excuse that English is an evolving language, that exceptions need to be made. But, you'RE (LOL, not the possessive, eh?) correct that simple concepts are just that - simple. It's a shame that too many Americans have let themselves slip and get lazy.

I agree, it's really sad when I play an online game and see someone making a grammatical error and not caring in the slightest. I'm still young and make mistakes but try to keep my spelling and writing in check. If I do spell something wrong, then I either made a mistake, and would like to know, or am trying to speed up my writing with someone who understands that.

The level of illiteracy is alarming and widespread, I agree. I am a bit of a grammar and spelling nerd myself.
However, it is not connected in any way with insisting that immigrants learn English. Of course they should learn.

Meeeee agree too. I'm bothered by so many other things that the apparent illiteracy in the USA had got to be on the lower tiers of my list of "things that bother me". I'm more bothered by the level of apathy and corruptio- then illiteracy.

Hi Meeeeeeee...Yes, I am! I submitted a similar question last year and only received five or six replies. It's quite apparent (IMO) that our lack of funding and over-crowded classrooms have contributed to this issue. I take pride in writing proper English. However,I make my fair share of mistakes!
