In Indiana, if this would help, needed one outlet that was a GFI, after the inspection I added as many as I wanted without GFI.

In the house, the rule is no more than 12 feet between outlets. The rationale is that most lamps and electrical appliances have six foot cords, so you won't need to use an extension cord.

This rule doesn't apply in the garage. You need an outlet wherever electricity could be used, and that's it. For example, you'll need an outlet in a space where a freezer might conceivably be located. You'll need another outlet where you might have a workbench. If your garage is wide enough that you could have a work area on both sides, you probably should have an outlet on both sides. Although one GFCI-protected outlet is the minimum, I would install several. It's for your own advantage.

You can put as many or as few as you like in a garage. If attached garage, make sure to fire stop where wiring comes into the garage. Use gfci for your safety.
