This is just the amount of data sent by your computer to other computers and received by your computer from other computers. As you print things to a network printer, browse the Internet, play online games, etc. these numbers will increase correspondingly. If you upload a file to a website or send an e-mail with an attachment, you'll see your bytes sent increase more than your bytes received. Conversely, if you download a file from the Internet, you'll see your bytes received increase more than your bytes sent. Both will increase, though - most applications use the TCP/IP protocol, and this protocol says that for every certain amount of data sent by one computer to another, the receiving computer has to acknowledge that it received them all. So, your computer might send 10 "packets" of data, and the receiving computer would then send back to you 1 packet to your computer saying "I got packets 1-10".

1 byte = 8 bits. 1 bit is a piece of information (1 or 0). As you communicate with the world (send and receive) you exchange packets. A typical packet is 1500 bytes. To download a file you need to request it. The request for the file is "sent" data, the file you receive is "received" data. If you mostly download, your received will outnumber your sent roughly 5:1.

This is the amount of data that is being sent & received by your computer (that's why you could see files on other computers or a website hosted in some other country).
