Meditations are of various kinds, and many practices which help to become 'meditative'
The general reference to the word is when the mind becomes quieter, and the intellect becomes very sharp , alert, receptive and non concluding (i.e. free from jumping into quick conclusions)...
A child too is meditative, but un-awares ! That makes the whole difference, and stepping into a meditative state in full awareness is very simple but not at all easy !! Hence many practices are required to create the possibility and conducive situation, since meditation has to happen by itself.

The first point is what do you really mean by 'meditation'? I cannot have a million things in my mind, and then say that I am meditating just by closing my eyes!

For meditation one must have first a clear vision. That is possible when we look forward to some specific goal with fierce determination and are willing to throw off other things for it. And definitely a pure heart helps!

Dear Ms Swati,

Always remember, "When there are too many answers for anything there is no correct one".
Meditation means trying to make your mind quiet. The problem is when we get absolutely relaxed we tend to sleep!!! And this has been referred to as "Yogic Nidra".Whenever I myself try to meditate, I have a tendency to fall asleep. To avoid this try meditating while sitting in any posture you feel comforatble. Just sit and relax. Concentrate on your breathing, inhale and exhale. Slowly you will experience a reduction in your muscle tone. You will feel that your limbs have gone heavier due to lack of any movement ( the medical term is lack of any "righting reflex").
Then the time flies away. I have never experienced anything more, so I cant tell you more about it. But there are several health and other benefits,e.g.,
1. Increased patience and thus a feeling of calm
2. Reduction in Blood Pressure due to reduced sympathetic activity and increased parasympathetic one
3. Your heart rate becomes slower and regular for same reason
4. Your capacity to focus on a task
If I am able to progress beyond this , I will let you know
And yes forget about the very stupid statements of being "heightened sense of awareness while feeling calm and sleepy..." or "being in a state of absolute awareness while being completely unawares at the same time..." . These are nothing but hokey-poky being circulated to glamourize meditation.
We can discuss it more if you like. Do tell me your experieces too.
Thanks for reading me and regards,

hi
meditation means healing of your body mind and soul. It is the only path if you believe me to realise God.

You will agree with me that to learn anything you need a teacher. It applies to everybody.

Now you must find a teacher first and thee follow him.

you can learn about the path by reading any saint book.

In the beginning you can do one thing.

Sit in a relaxed way, close your eyes concentrate on the darkness inside without any thought of this world.

Practice for atleast 5-10 min. perday anytome. In one month or less time you will be able to see a light inside you. But to reach spirituality I would recommend you to look for a teacher(Guru)

Wish this will help you

you really need to improve your grammar, use of language, and ability to comprehend concepts, not to mention a lot of trust in your own conscience.

The easiest way to meditate is to just try and relax your mind, but if you want some real meditation, you need to have a complete mastery of the english language and be able to describe intelligently different situations that affect your emotions.

Meditation is about revealing the truth, so in order to do that you have to be on top of the situation and really understand the things you feel, see, think about, and know. I would suggest finding a teacher.

Peace:+

I could not have put it better than the answer above. Whenever you are fully aware of yourself you are meditating. Most or all the time we act like zombies and have pre programmed reactions

I dont like John Sample & Julian's answer. Mastery of English lang has NOTHING to do with meditation. If you cant make someone's day with your kind words perhaps you should keep it shut gentlemen ??

How can a person with such a horrible grasp on the English language actually think they can convince a bunch of strangers that he/she is working on their PhD? Honestly, stick with meditating, because clearing your head of any thoughts seems to be working out for you.

there are three states in which our mind will be depending on the situations. they are:
alpha, beta, gamma states
when we are normal our mind is in beta state
when we sleep very deeply we reach a state called alpha during that time our mind has the capability to take out the thoughts from our deep mind and analyse it. that time whatever our mind says we will follow.
and the gamma state is reached only by yogis
when we do meditation our alpha mind opens and makes us think of our problems and analyse it PEACEFULLY.
this will be effective only under proper guidance.

Don't get disheartened so quickly, you probably are just trying too hard. Meditation is simply means relaxing into who you really are.

Try some online guided meditations. at" www.beliefnet.org
OR www.hayhouseradio.com

Better still, why not ask one of your friends, who always does so.
