My son has had a pretty high fever for the past 2 days. It started at 101 and now is about 103. I have been giving him motrin and have noticed he is passing gas alot (I think it is probably caused from the medicine). His cheeks are really red and I thought at first it was teething but my other two kids never had such a high grade fever when they were teething........ Could it be an ear infection - should I wait another day or take him to his dr today??????

I am not sure if I should take him to a minor emergency clinic or take him to his family dr....?????

Interesting, but this EXACT thing happened to my 19month over the weekend! Persistent high fever for over 24 hrs NEEDS to be looked at. I finally took him to the ER Sunday night, after almost 30 hours of a fever between 100 and 102, he has an ear infection which was totally not on my radar b/c he wasn't pulling or touching his ear at all.

Call the family care Dr and tell them that he's had a persistent high fever for 2 days and it hasn't broken...use those terms and they should get you in right away. Otherwise, go to the ER but do it now, b/c the longer you wait, the higher chance of dehydration and/or it turning into something bad like pneumonia or something. I hope this helps! Good luck to you and your sweet baby!

Take him to the Dr. call your primary family doctor and try to get in there before you go into the emergency clinic. Could be an ear infection, could be strep throat, my son had strep a few weeks ago and he's about as old as yours. We had a fever of 101, but it went up to 104 so we went in and found strep.

Teething doesn't actually cause the feaver. It lowers the immune system so they are more suseptable to colds and illnesses, that's what causes the feavers.

If motrin is not taking the fever down within a half hour, make an appointment for his doctor. If you can't be seen today, take him to the ER. 103 degrees could signify an ear infection, and you could last it out- BUT only if the motrin is taking it down. There might be something else wrong.

Does he have any other symptoms? Fussy, crying, irritable? Higher fevers are not uncommon for small children, they can easily run temps of 104 or higher with no damage.
You can also alternate using Tylenol with the Motrin to keep his fever in check since you can only give Motrin every 6 hours.
If he has not other symptoms and is in a relative good mood then it probably is just his teeth and not much to worry about

Yes, he could be teething and run such a high fever. Or the teething could have caused an ear infection. I would definitely take him in to see his pediatrician ASAP, b/c if he's had a fever for two days, you need to treat the problem if you can.

I think the general rule is a temperature over 102 warrants a visit to the doctor or emergency clinic. Chances are that it's a viral infection that wouldn't benefit to much from antibiotics. The main concern is whether or not your son is eating and drinking. Dehydration is a major concern with fevers. My fatherly opinion is that it warrants a call to the doctor to see if they can sqeeze you in for an appointment today. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the health and well being of our children.

I would definitely take him to the dr. If you can't get him in for an appointment, I'd take him into urgent care. I have 3 children and this usually worked for me giving them motrin and if that doesn't work for the fever I'd try to give him a bath. Not a cold one for sure! Normal temp ...warm water. I'm sure you tried these. I think because it's gone on for two days he should probably be seen. Poor baby :( Good luck!

Couple of things... you sound like me... I freak everytime the kids get a fever. My daughter caught roto virus and had 104 fever and scared me to death. She couldn't eat and she couldn't keep fluids down and had massive diahrea. So Is your son taking fluids? This is key. Motrin is good but switch off every dose with tylenol. Don't know why... but it works. Keep the house cooler and in a diaper or underwear to keep cooler. If you go to the ER they are going to ask you if he is taking fluids. There isn't much they can do for a fever but Iv him to hydrate and give motrin. Go to a family dr and have him looked at for ear infection or anything else that is causing this. That way if he needs antibiotics he can start to be treated. The time to panic is if he stops taking fluids and urinating. Alot of kids hate pedialyte...so give gatorade (that is what my doc reccommended) Alot of kids like orange, lemonade, or the new rain kind they have in the berry flavor,. Also not as staining. I can't stress fluids enough and Motrin/tylenol. Make an appt. My intuition always says rush to the er but in the end we usually end up waisting money and dragged out the kids when they felt yucky. We did take my daughter to the Er when she was screaming in pain from the stomach cramps from diahrea. She was 2 and a half at the time and they gave her an iv and added a small dose of morphine for pain. They x-rayed her stomach took stool samples and urine samples. They gave her that iv and she snapped out of it and was in a good mood (for awhile). You are the parent...it is a hard desicion... Use your gut feeling and if you know your child is in pain insist on somthing for it. I walked away with tylenol with codine for her cramps and a suppository for nausea... to help keep that fluid down. Hopefully it is just a fever ... his body is fighting something off. Hopefully just a cold. Good luck. My thoughts are with you. (sorry spell check isn't working)

Yes you should take him in today. Preferably to your family doctor. If you call them and tell them this, if they are any good at all, they WILL fit him in today. He is too young to let this go. Teething get's no fever over 101. So it is definately not teething. Could be anything. Another hint to help cool him is a cool bath. But if he is getting in soon to the doc's, just let them see the temp. But yes, get him to a doctor today.

Strep is also going around right now, my 4 month old daughter got it last week and ran a temp of 102 with it, with no other symptoms, my son spent all night Sunday night and all day yesterday throwing up from having Strep (in children it causes upset stomach)

I would take him in ASAP, it's so hard to tell what's wrong when they can't tell you :)
