WARS are needed as a natural part of human evolution. When you look at war from a long-range perspective, it becomes clear that, as destructive as wars are, their very destructiveness has served as the primary force for the evolution of the human race. By mercilessly elimnating those who were unable to survive in the theater of war, wars resulted in a constant upgrading of both the physiological and intellectual acuity of man.

Although many bright people perish in wars, the preponderance of the casualties occur among people with the limited intellectual capacity to understand the mechanics of wars and who are thus unable to avoid becoming casualties.

Who would seriosly dispute the fact that smart people have higher living standards than intellectually less endowed persons do? War elimnates the intellectually less fit and thus, in the end, raises the average intelligence and the living standards of society as a whole.

Throughout the ages, evolution took advantage of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse, war, natural disasters, disease and famine.

If we succeed in eliminating armies and war, we are also eliminating war in its capacity as a powerful contributor to evolution by keeping the world population in check. We are now at 6 billion humans, scientific projections of growth predict 10 billion within 50 years...mostly in under developed countries. Humanity will reach the limits of available resources at 9-12 billion..this is not sustainable.

We can only speculate as to which path evolution will take in reducing the world from 10 to 3 billion. A battle for resources will favor those with higher levels of intelligence and rationality. Evolution never receds to irrationality, superstition and stupidity.

War is a result of violent reaction to a conflict.
When a conflict is too strong to be born by either party one part starts the war which might be intended by the second anyway.

tribes go to war because they think they can resolve a conflict by force. Sometimes it is the only solution.
Other times it is a bad solution because a sensible negotiation could avoid bloodshed.

So although war is always a bloody solution, sometimes it ends in peace for all. Civil War in USA can be an example of a war that resulted positively.

May peace be with us all.
Lord give us the strength and patient to avoid all wars.

Weaker cultures perish? I hope that by this point we aren't using war as the sole criterion of a culture's success...

Possibly the only benefit of war is depopulation, though it has only been significant a few time in history. If you are a believer that technology is essentially good, then for sure tech would be a positive of war (the engineering successes of WWII were amazing). I would also make the Romantic argument that wide scale war makes us reflect on humanity and doubt the unabashed nationalism, religious fanaticism, and factionalism that lead to wars in the first place.

All wars have given rise to technological advances (propeller planes to jet planes to name just one following WW1); also the victors have all walked out of it wealthier than when they entered it. Even population density has benefited from probably the most negative aspect of war: the killing of thousands of innocent people - in that fewer people were left after the war than before, thus equalizing the over-population scales again. The only true negative of war, is that the politicians gain points too (especially the ones on the victorious side!)

In a general sense I've never been witness to ANY POSITIVES, as it relates to War. Certainly War "drives" economies, while at the same time degenerating them.

The most obvious and possibly long term affect of War, is that NO ONE WINS!

Positive) Technological advancement,Weaker cultures perish; leaving only the successful ones. The world suddenly becomes less crowded for the survivors, man finds himself on the battlefield, we learn from our mistakes, we get practice for an alien Antagonist, makes people ask questions, gives answers relatively quickly, eliminates the need to talk, makes people care about the simple things, Allows us to remember once a year, Strengthens our will to survive, makes us appreciate what we have, solves problems, reduces oppressive regimes to dust, gives me a job, gives many other people a job, makes money for arms dealers, makes money for everyone who wins, establishes positions of superiority, gives men something to do, makes toys, makes songs, makes charities, occupies humanity while we try to find what all this sh*t is about.
Negative) People die?.........................

As counter-intuitive as it is, major wars have actually brought positive changes both for those involved, and by a trickle-down effect, eventually humanity as a whole.
There are many examples of this in history, but closer to our present times, let's take World Wars I and II. The turn of the 20th Century started the restlessness that began brewing World War One, but in its wake women in Europe began to take a serious look at their largely "inferior status". For thousands of years the human female had been regarded by the male as having no relevance except bearing and raising children, tending the home, and taking orders from the men of the family. But with the men gone off to war, suddenly it was the women who had to take charge of a lot of stuff on the home front. .
The war had popped the cork off the bottle, and the Genii stuck her head out and smelt Freedom. The Women's Movement had begun, but it had to wait for another major world war for the Genii to come right out of the bottle. When it came, in 1935, suddenly they were crying out for the services of women, not only to tend to the everyday running of things at home, but in weapons and airplane factories, where it was soon discovered that women were extremely good at doing tedious, repetitive work, plus their smaller hands made them very deft at assembling small parts. "Rosie the Riveter" would one day become one of the most famous female symbols of the War Years.
Women both around Europe and here in the States, were discovering the doors of their domestic cages had opened, and they were testing their wings. By the end of that war it was clear they would never go back into those cages, ever again. Today that Freedom Movement has spread, and continues to spread around the world, towards a time when there will be absolute, one hundred per cent recognised equality between men and women in all fields of endeavor, and ONLY the worst macho male chauvinists, and the fanatical religious fundamentalists refuse to recognise this as one of the biggest, most universally beneficial advances for all humanity. All triggered, and brought to fruition as a direct result of two major world wars.
The negative side of those wars, of course, was the devastating destruction and carnage. But like a Phoenix, rising out of the ashes, a new creature emerged, and its name is Gender Equality.
We have just once again paid tribute to a man who championed the cause against another form of harsh inequality that began its struggle for freedom following the upheaval of Civil War. Here, too, the torch was lit on the battlefield of human conflict, and here, too, that flame, having been lit, will not be extinguished until the ultimate goal has finally been reached. Also, like the cause that set women free from the Cage of Domesticity, that for the equality of ALL people, regardless of the color of their skin or their particular ethnicity, born out of warfare, will some day be recorded as dramatic positive milestones in the history of mankind.
Nobody but a fool glorifies War in any form. But factuality cannot be denied. Each time man engages in it, somehow, in some way, he takes a big step forward into a new realm of enlightenment.

Positives ? It bring about quick and dramatic change to our global society. (Notice I said nothing about the "goodness" of the change)

Negative ? People die and societies perish or are absorbed.

What's that? People die and societies perish or are absorbed anyway, even without war ? Well...hmmmmmm...
