I keep hearing about the soaring costs of healthcare and I keep hearing people say that we need to fix the healthcare system. I would like to hear your ideas on this, please leave political rhetoric at the door. I am interested in hearing everyone’s ideas.

Bert T, I like a lot of your ideas. Drug companies are not looking for cures to diseases, there is no money in the cure. They have to keep the customer coming back jsut like any street corner dealer.

1. Get drug companies to start finding CURES, not TREATMENTS. No more drug commercials for anythig except pimple cream.
2. Completely get rid of Health Insurance. The entire industry is corrupt. Because of the IMMENSE costs of insurance, an Xray (from technology which has been around for 80 plus years) costs over $300.00 at the hospital. Costs are ridiculous.,My grandfather was in a nursing home, paid by Madicare. We got an itemized list of his expenses each month.
"Shampoo - $11.00"
"4 aspirin - $15.00"
It's completely over the top markups such as these which are costing the medical profession so much credibility. With the kind of profits they're making, they turn around and hire unqualified foreigners at barely legal wages to be RNs and THEN have the temerity to lament the tragic lack of nurses in this country.

So no more drug ads and no more doctors in drug companies' wallets. Any doctor or RN caught accepting so much as a Hall's lozenge from a drug salesman loses his or her medical license, period.

Tort reform which makes sense. Suing a doctor who can't save your wife after a mortal car accident makes no sense (depending on her injuries), but suing to recover lost time, money spent on the wrong diagnoses, etc should be perfectly legal. If I have a rodent problem, you charge me thousands to remove the rodents BUT YOU DONT, should I still have to pay? Or just consider that money lost? I wouldnt expect this with a plumber, I shouldnt have to with a doctor.

Cosmetic surgery should be only for medical reasons, not because of a patient's low self esteem. Too many good doctors are installing too many saline bags when we need qualified surgeons in real hospitals. So, we federalize the cosmetic surgery industry. Drop the price to "$30 a pair", all these "Dr. 90210s" will be back in hospitals taking out tonsils in no time.

Being one of 45 million Americans without access to affordable health care this is a subject that is close to me. I see the problem as private health insurance company's. They reap huge profits from the health problems of people. It creates an uneven playing field as they set the prices that they pay for health care. If I go into a Dr. office or pharmacy there is a set price but the insurance company's can undercut that at a fraction of the price. I have to pay full price and they pay a lot less. In effect I am subsidizing these big company's profits. They should have to pay what I do or I should be able to negotiate what I pay to equal their discounts. I think that the only way to fix the problem is to take the business away from them and put it in the hands of the government where they can negotiate the prices to even it up. While socialized medicine is not a perfect answer it is better then what we have. Canada is a perfect example of what works. Yes, they do pay more in taxes but they at least get something for their money. When ask, most Canadians would not to exchange systems with us, so in my estimation they are over all happy with their health care system.

The government shoud provide universal health care. We could pay for it by cutting back on the incredibly bloated military budget.
The government does a fairly good job with Medicare. It is not perfect, but it's pretty good. Just remove all age restrictions from Medicare. Everyone should be able to get Medicare, regardless of their age or income.

By putting a leash on Insurance providers.
insurance providers are the ones driving up the costs by having to make profits that are only rivaled by oil companies.
If we put a leash on them, the health care costs would begin to fall. Good drivers shouldn't have to pay the same rates as bad drivers, so why should good doctors have to pay just as high of malpractice insurance as bad doctors, just so insurers can keep their profit margins sky-high?
