I am about four and a half months pregnant and plan to breastfeed.
i was a chronic pot smoker and of course i quit when i found out i was pregnant. i plan on breastfeeding and after i have the baby, there will be some nights i wouldnt mind smoking a nice doobie after i put my baby to bed. i am wondering if anyone KNOWS if it will affect my breastfeeding.
i plan on asking my doctor, im just looking to see if people on here actually KNOW if it will affect breastfeeding or not.
Im not looking for anyones opinion thank you, so please keep anything negative to yourself. Especially overly conservative people who look at marijuana like its crack! I was raised in southern ontario by very liberated parents and marijuana is no different to us than a glass of wine or beer.
Like i said, i plan on asking my doctor, just curious if anyone actually knows if it will affect my breastfeeding or not?

thank you sexy ***** for listening to me, as i had said, when i found out i was pregnant, i quit smoking it altogether.
and i will be asking my doc, and the breastfeeding is a bit more important to me than the pot will be, so obviously if my DOCTOR tells me it will affect my breastfeeding, i will wait to pick up my joint until my baby is on the bottle..

Although I am not a smoker, I agree with you that it is not like crack. In some places it is actually legal, so I have no problem with it. As far as it passing through the breast milk, I am not sure at all about that. I would tend to think that it does only because I think most everything does so I would definitely talk to your doctor.

I understand that you want to breast feed, it is a wonderful thing to do.....I am not able to because of an iron deficiency. It might be advisable though to consider formula feeding if you do in fact want to occasionally smoke pot to insure that the baby is not at risk.

Now a few words to those of you who immediately treated her as is she was Charles Manson for asking this question......How many of you have continued to smoke cigarettes while pregnant or picked the habit up right after giving birth? How many of you have continued to live in the same house as someone who smokes cigarettes and breathed their second hand smoke day and night? I am willing to bet quite a few of you. My point is....it it a proven fact that there are many DEADLY CHEMICALS in cigarette smoke, but people act like it's no big deal because it is legal to buy them at the Quick Mart, well it doesn't change the fact that they are killers and the toxins in them are passed to your babies as well!

Yes it most likely will. Everything that goes in your body pretty much affects the breast milk supply. My in-laws are Korean and they eat alot of kimchi. (Highly spiced pickled cabbage) They told me about how alot of babies don't want the breast milk because they can taste it. Marijuana is a mind altering drug as are anti depressants. You can't take anti depressants while breast feeding. I don't think it would be a safe risk. I had problems breast feeding so I don't know how far you can pump ahead of time. Remember ... are you going to be able to function to attend to your child's needs say in the middle of the night? Be careful! I don't condone this at all in fact...bad idea.... but be careful, maybe have someone watch your child and pump your breast milk for a few days ahead of time if you can pump more and can assure it will be out of your system by that time. Marijuana when I was younger and without kids.... made a person relaxed and sleepy...it is really difficult to deal with the lack of sleep on a clear head. Do some research. Ask your doctor. Be aware that if you get caught there will be consequences though.... especially if you are caring for a young child. over all... your having a baby.. your life is going to have wonderful changes ahead. Make a good choice and leave pot and all the crap behind.

Yes, it will defenatly be taken up in your blood and passed on to your baby. I use to smoke (cigarettes) and stoped as soon as I found out I am pregnant. So, by quiting you did you and your baby good.

I am sure if you have one or two once a week it will be fine, but I can promise you that once that baby is born, you will change your attitude and think and do things differently.

I changed a lot when I had my first baby nine years ago and I am now 4 months pregnant with number two.

congrats and good luck

It isnt the best thing to do, any drugs that go in you system when pregnant or breastfeeding therefore go through your babies too. I have smoked dope while pregnant. I have always smoked dope and stoppped for 4 month, but at this time, I am having real trouble sleeping and a joint does help. I have spoke to a drug councillor about this and they said that it isnt realy a harmful drug like herion or crack!!! but isnt ideal, so please dont beat yourself up for it.

IJust take it easy, and then have a clow out, thats what I am gonna do

Yes, it will affect your breast milk. It will pass from you to the baby in almost a pure form. So, logically speaking, not a good idea. If you wish to smoke pot, I would suggest skipping the breast feeding. Otherwise hold off on it.

Got this info for ya:

"There is a risk of harm after birth for breast-feeding
infants if their mothers use marijuana as it passes through breast milk in almost pure form to the infant
(63). Even prior to conception, marijuana use causes changes in both males and females. It causes a
decrease in testosterone, produces fewer sperm, and produces sperm with more abnormal chromosomes
for the fathers-to-be. In addition marijuana may produce more testosterone and tended to produce less
healthy eggs in females. With poorer quality eggs and sperm with abnormal defects there is an increased
occurrence of birth defects. Marijuana also interferes with cell division, a process crucial for reproduction
for healthy fetal growth and development (64) (65). One laboratory study of pregnant rats exposed to
cannabis produced less fertile offspring with smaller reproductive organs (66), and another study
demonstrated that embryonic development may be halted before the three-day stage suggesting that
embryos are prevented from attaching to the uterine wall if exposed to marijuana (67). While studies
demonstrate mixed findings, moderate marijuana use was found to be related to increased risk of ocular
hypertelorism and epicanthus; and other studies have suggested that there may be significant (although
temporary) differences in the behavior patterns and nervous systems of infants whose mothers frequently
used marijuana during pregnancy (68). Preliminary findings from a 15 year study indicate that prenatal
exposure to marijuana impairs decision making, future planning, cognition (reasoning and memory) and
sustained attention among children who were marijuana-exposed babies (69)."

Canabis stays in the blood stream for 28 days, which is actually one of the longest of any drug. It will get circulated around your body and come out in your breastmilk, and it will affect your baby. The body excreets toxins in any way it can, and it will use your breastmilk as one of the ways it excreets the canabis.
You should wait until you are no longer breastfeeding your baby before you start smoking again.

YES!!!!!!!!!! it will stay in the milk and go to your baby. If you breastfeed and smoke than it will make your baby addicted to the marijuana and they will become colicy (cry alot) and they will go through withdrawl.

That will not be fun. I hope your baby is okay.

please don't breast feed if you are going to smoke pot. you're not suppose to smoke pot when you are pregnant, so why would you feed it to your baby through breast milk. Even if you don't know what it will do, why even take the chance. Babies are defenseless against idiots who don't know how to take care of them.

anything you drink, eat or take or smoke will be expressed into your breastmilk. and i so do not care where you were raised, smoking pot is just plain stupid, set a better example for your kids than your parents did for you.
