My gas heater is not working properly. I have it set to a certain temperature and it will shut off before it gets there. I have to keep turning it off and on in order to get any heat. Sometimes it will stay on until the desired temperature is reached, but more often than not it stays on for a few minutes and then turns off. It does say I need to replace the battery, but it has been saying that since last winter too, and it didn't affect our a/c this past summer. Will replacing the battery make a difference or should I call a tech? I am not good at DIY with heaters and electrical/gas issues.

Try changing the battery first. If it does work then you just saved yourself a whole lot of money by not calling out a serviceman just to replace your battery. If it doesnt work then you might realistically consider the service man. Forget the stuff about last year and just change the battery

You say"I am not good at DIY with heaters and electrical/gas issues." Depending on the type of thermostat you have it may need to be replaced or it could be set incorrectly or it could be a furnace control problem. I would recommend calling a tech .
