Integers are useful in math because they demonstrate the concept of wholeness. As an example of how you need to know if something is whole (not a fraction), consider the factor theorem. It is very important to be able to show whether a number can be expressed as factors or, if it has no factors other than 1 and itself, it is prime. 6 is a number that has factors 1,6,3 and 2. If a non-zero number, let's say a, is a factor of another number, let's say b, when you divide b by a (b/a), you should get an integer. That means that a divides evenly into b with no remainder. 6/1=6, 6/3 =2, 6/2=3. No remainders from these divisions means that the results were integers, which means these were all factors of 6. Factors are very important in math! The concept of integer is important for factoring.

For one thing, how about the temperature? Water freezes at 0 degrees celsius, and is also defined for negative numbers (which integers include).

Integers are just whole numbers like 1,2,6,76,1807,etc, rather than being fractions/decimals - you mostly use them whenever you do anything to do with whole numbers - eg counting whole objects like number of stones, eggs, bananas, etc or rounding decimals to whole numbers to simplify the maths

You can use them for counting things.

5 oranges, 3 apples, 22 bananas, 15 people, ...

I believe that is the most common use.
(You don't say there were 15.3 people on the bus today for example.)
