In the UK a doctor will not prescribe the combined pill (21 days on and 7 days off) if you smoke and are aged 35 or over- even if you have one ciggy every now and again as it increases the risk of blood clots, strokes etc. At this age you will be switched to 3rd generation pill like the mini pill (non stop no break) as the chances of problems are lower. If you are younger than 35 you can take either pill. Obviously, ideally you should stop smoking (you will gets lots of people saying this I expect) however, this is easier said than done (I am still trying) so, you are doing the right thing by checking which is the best option for you.

There is one big thing that smoking on the pill does (apart from all the other things that smoking does).
It increases your risk quite a lot of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) ie a blood clot. If you are really unlucky, the clot may break off and travel into your lungs, which is a pulmonary embolism. While people can recover from this, it can also lead to death.

dont smoke and be on the pill if your 30 and over cause bad things will happen or at least could. I heard the pill put weight on a person, but I see really skinny people that are on it.

Smoking and taking the pill increases your risk for blood clots! Also you may have a slight increase in appetite - the pills mess with your hormone levels.

MUCH higher risk for heart attack & stroke!!! Dr. did not warn You of these risks? get Your butt either searching online, or back to the Dr. to get these %'s. It is a very high risk factor. It depends on the type of pill, but it can increase of decrease one's appetite. I LOST 25 lbs! I am now 5'10", 132 lbs. I hope this helped! Jen in Michigan.

SMOKING WHILE ON THE PILL IS NOT RECOMMENDED, AND THE PILL WILL MAKE YOU GAIN A FEW POUNDS BUT NOT MUCH. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT SMOKING ON THE PILL. MINE TOLD ME IF I DIDN'T QUIT SMOKING HE WAS NOT GOING TO REFILL MY PRESCRILPTION.
