A ritual is an act, and a tradition is the idea. So people can perform a traditional ritual. I hope that's clear.

a tradition is a custom or ritual that is passed down through the generations.
An example of a tradition would be going to church every christmas with your family then having christmas dinner.
a ritual is an action or a set of actions that one performs repeatedly.
An example of a ritual would be the actual ceremony at church.
i suppose that a ritual can become a tradition if one gets their family and/or friends to do it and then they get their families and friends to do it, and so on.

Rituals are cultural practices which have become traditional. Traditions are cultural practices which have become ritualistic.

I believe rituals are a cerimony which people chose to perform to sastify a need or want.
Traditions are cerimonies handed down from the past, and are performed to honour the cerimony, which could be considered a ritual when it was performed the firsttime around
