There is a secret to writing non-fiction articles for periodicals that most people don't know. The secret isn't the article -- it's the picture for the article. If you have a reasonably well-written article, you are much more likely to get it published if you have a good picture to illustrate it. If you want to write sports articles, take a decent digital camera with you, set it to its highest quality and take some pictures. When you contact the editor, tell him/her that you have an article and pictures ready to go. This will make you much more likely to get freelance article assignments.
