Boric Acid in powder form is most effective, and inexpensive. It has to be used carefully, especially with children or pets present, and shouldn't strictly be used in contact with any food service items.

HD and/or Lowes, Ace, etc sell it usually in 1 liter plastic squeeze bottles with a cone shaped nozzle for applying.

Try a cockroach "Hotel" where they check in but never check out.
It is basically a sticky patch with bait. When they go for the bait, they can't get out of the sticky stuff.

Only problem is that they reproduce faster than you can catch them with this method. Best bet is to have a pro do a treatment to exterminate them.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk
