discipline and patience. with as many as 32 strokes per character, you need a steady hand. there are 2000 japanese kanji for everyday use, 4000 if you include "special" such as names and ancient words. memorizing the characters is one thing, but there is an art to actually writing it with precision and dexterity.

Chinese call it "chi". A good book on the subject is the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Chinese Painting, available as a used paperback with the title, The Tao of Painting. You can get it cheap at any book site or ebay.

You will quickly produce pictures similar to Chinese masters.
