You can, but it should be processed into bio-diesel for the best results. This process requires the use of a solvent to separate the glycerin from the cooking oil. Cooking oil has about 10% glycerin which must be removed. The glycerin can gum up your fuel system and cause problems.
But using cooking oil converted into bio-diesel is much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than regular diesel.
Even cheaper if you can find a buyer for the pure glycerin byproduct from the process.
You need to check your local and state laws on the manufacture and use of bio-diesel.

Aaron is wrong, in addition he can't spell "vegetable". Diesels can be modified to run on different types of cooking oils (usually they refine the old, used stuff, not new). They have also developed diesel fuel out of natural oils, soybean oil is the most common, that stuff is referred to as bio-diesel, I think that has a bright future, not so much the old cooking oils.

I believe there is a car someone spent a large amount of money to make in order to fuel it on cooking oil, but that's just one of its own kind; everyday vehicles can't be run on cooking oil.

for a diesel hell yeah. just some lye and some methanol racing fluid into used vegetbal oil and its just as good. But thats only because of diesels having a high compression ratio. Gasoline engines on the other hand thats a little more trickey since the compression ratio is usually only 7.5/1 compared to diesels 22.5/1 ratio

Yes. But the ENTIRE car needs to be converted to work with the oil.

If you have a newer diesel model, yes.
But it's officially tax evasion - like using heating oil (which is the same as diesel).
