I'm assuming you have a Thinkpad 600.

Error 173 means configuration data was lost. Service data relates the problem to either the backup battery or the system board.

Error 163 means Time/Date were not set. Service data relates this to the System board.

1. Set the date and time and press F10 to save the settings and exit the setup.

2. If the problem remains replace the CMOS battery

3. If the problem remains, replace the mainboard.

This is per the Hardware Maintenance Service Manual for the Thinkpad 600.
