So there I was polishing my sister's car in the lovely African Summer Sun... and I'm tomato red as a result. What can I apply to soothe the burn? Oh yeah I've started itching too.

For a real serious sunburn, the best over the counter medication I discovered is a product named: "Solarcane". It comes in an aerosol can and you spray it on your skin. It's has a very cooling effect and helps to repair the skin immediately. Your skin will still peal if you were severly burnt but the pain is minimized.

For minor sunburn ... aloe gel from a bottle or if it's available, just break off or cut off an aloe plant stem and apply the goo onto your skin.

Butter or butter like products only make my sunburn worse.

Your best bet is aftersun as this cools the skin down, once you have done this it is really important to keep it moisturised so a hardy moisturiser should stop any itching and will also stop the skin from peeling too much apply it as often as you can especially at night. Unfortunately there is not an awful lot you can do for it and I can sympathise I was burnt in the south of france last year on the beach, turned round in the shower and it was just above my bum OUCH!

Pure yogurt it soothes the soreness and stops you itching but the itching will only get worse when you start peeling but pure yogurt is the best. Try and stay out the sun for a little wile and have warm baths or showers as hot ones will irritate it more

Well, to start with you should always use some high SPF sun cream to prevent the sun burn at the first place, I find that spreading plain Greek yogurt really helps. Or pure aloe vera juice. Give it a go.

Unfortunately, if your sunburn is severe, you should see a doctor and get him/her to prescribe a steroid cream. Otherwise, soaking in a tub of water and vinegar will soothe your skin (albeit leave it smelly). Follow up with yogurt as has been suggested by other answerers.

Seriously, aloe vera directly ffrom the plant. You can also chill the leaves first. Nothing better, except not getting the burn in the first place! lol
