First thing if you have the UBS Optical mouse then unplug it and then restart the system and after proper starting the operating system plug in your mouse.
Second thing if it is PS2 Mouse then Plug in first then restart the windows. If then also it is not working Means as you says that its right click is working but not able to move or select. Then replace your mouse because Internal movable rays are damaged. due to which your mouse is not moving.
Also optical mouse is move only of absorbing surfaces. like dark cloth mouse pad. Yaar I am very sure because I had repaired more than 25 optical mouse.

If the mouse is wireless, replace the batteries. If it is not, replace the mouse itself. Sounds like it has shorted out, and there is no repair to an optical mouse. Parts would cost more that the mouse did.

Try using a piece of paper for a mouse pad to test out the mouse. If the mouse works, the surface you are using the mouse on is not suited for its use. If the mouse does not work, exchange it for a replacement

If its a cordless mouse you can reset it. There should be a little button on the bottom of the mouse that you can press. You might have to press it at the same time your pressing the receiver button.

download the mouse driver... even if you are have Window XP or higher version if you have this trouble, it should come with in a CD-Rom form, with the original packaging for the mouse, it not attached, then visit the mouse manufacturer's website, and download it. i am sure it will work, unless it is manufactured by some back-yard shops. good luck.

Get a laser mouse instead of optical - should cut out most of the problems.

optical mouse can't be used on a smooth surface. maybe a
mouse pad works for you.
by the way, is your left button ok?
