the smell is weak but noticible and smells like something rotting that was watered down.

it was probity natural gas, marsh gas or sewer gas.. its not going to hurt you unless its in high concentration's. its not a terrorist thing cause if it was you'd be sick and or dead by now.. not a happy thought sweety.. but yeah don't worry.

Gas people have a thingamabob gas detector that they poke into corners and walls to detect the presence of gas.
I think this service is free if you have a gas connection.
If you dont, then the smell will be a dead animal that is trapped between your walls. or a broken sewer line. Sewer smells like sewer but if the others identify it as definitely gas, do something. It might be a major gas pipeline in the neighborhood..

Its probably a gas leak. And if you suspect a gas leak, call the gas company and they will come out with the right equipment to determine if it is a gas leak, find it and fix it.
