Settlers from long ago named the places. The English named New England, New York, New Hampshire...in honor of their homeland, and the same goes for the Spanish (New Mexico) and the French (New Orleans).

In all honesty, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Orleans, were all colonies of other countries and were named by the monarchs of same. We just kept them after gaining independance because they're very good names. I for one like having cities and states named after nice places with such rich histories. As far as stealing the names goes, you got it worng though.

Not that many kids are getting these names now. When last I checked, free will gave a parent the right to name their child whatever he or she wished.... If a White family can name their child names from Renaissance Italy, a Black family can give their child names from the Muslim holy book or region. It had mainly to do with things I won't discuss here, because it is a long discussion, but whether it stops happening or continues, it is their business, only.

Thats because the people initally involved in naming the new towns were from the original cities you mention (and many more you don't.) It was a symbol of respect to name a "new" town in the "new" world after your old one. (At least the Europeans thought so; the Native Americans could have cared less.)

Americans did not stole other city's names. Go to the history of America. 200 years ago the people came from Europe to America that already had city names in Europe and last and first name us well. Many different nationality came from Europe to South and North America, like it is from; England, France, Span, Portugal, Italy, Irish,Germany, etc. and they just kept existing city names.

Because the U.S. was discovered by "Dutch, and English explorers" "Henry Hudson", "Peter Stuyvesant", etc., They gave the names, we didn't ! They named it after their native places, in honor of their country, nobody "STOLE" anything, "New Mexico" was named so after the Spanish American war, and the land was claimed from Mexico. "New Orleans" was purchased from the French explorer's after the U.S. bought it from FRANCE, during the "Louisiana purchase" from them, Read a History book "Cement Head" !

I don't think settlers "stole" the names as such.
I think they just established places to live and used names of their former homelands. This had the side effect of telling outsiders where these settlers originated.
BTW New York was formerly named New Amsterdam by Dutch settlers.

You really should read some history before saying something so completely unfounded. Cities in the US were named by immigrants from other countries to remind them of the places they left. It wasn't America who stole any names, it was the former citizens of other countrie who brought familiar things with them.
