Why can foreigners marry their relatives and be considered Royalty?

Scientists pretty much agree that inbreeding increase the risk of physical and mental defects and the passing on of deceases. Therefore, it's discouraged in most cultures and even considered a taboo.

In spite of this knowledge, it has remained a common practice among royalty for many centuries. Perhaps the fear of admitting an interloper into the fold outweighs the risks of birth defects.

The British royal house is no exception although they almost always chose their mates among their relatives from other countries. Queen Victoria married a cousin from Germany (Saxe-Coburg-Gotha), Prince Albert. The current Queen, Elizabeth II, also picked a cousin, Prince Philip (Phillipos) of Greece and Denmark. Perhaps, the variety of the (international) genes in such selections dilute the risks somehow and the offsprings seem fairly normal (you may disagree that they are though, what with all the scandals...)

Inbredding is not something that is done much in either part of the civilized world. At least not without a strong disdain. I know in some tribal parts of the world they still do that without any social ostrachizing, but civilized royals don't do that anymore. Personally I'm a Southern American and the idea of even getting with an adopted cousin is gross to me. So I'm not for inbreeding.
