Poor you, it's miserable not having central heating. The citizens advice bureau would be best for advice as others suggested. If your landlord is good, he should loan you one or two electric heaters to keep your family warm. However if he does not you may have to borrow some from friends or family. Unfortunately I think you will be boiling a kettle up for bath water until its sorted out.

You do have to give him time to fix the boiler - it is possible that a spare part is to be ordered and that can take a day or two but I think he should be able to give you a date and keep you updated on the progress. Chase him for the loan of the electric heaters, and keep wrapped up in layers as much as you can.

Take care!

Your landlord does have the right to a reasonable time to get the boiler either replaced or fixed. In the meantime, he has a legal obligation (Landlords and Tenancy Act) to provide you with an alternative method of heating, he CANNOT let you freeze.
Your CAB should be able to advise you further.

I don't know about outside the US, but if there is something causing the dwelling to be uninhabitable - even temporarily - you may have a right to be put up in a hotel until the heat is fixed or demand the landlord provide portable space heaters. Especially since you have kids, you need to find out your rights in the situation and be very assertive and demand a quick resolution that does not endanger their health.

You do have to give the landlord reasonable time to get it fixed. Saying that he does have a responsibility to provide heating as part of the accommodation. He should provide plug in heaters and pay for the extra electricity they will use.

Landlords are notoriously bad a things like this. I remember this happening quite a bit growing up.

You have all sorts of rights and you MUST NOT wait a week for a warm house. You can get it done yourself and bill the landlord, or insist on being housed (hotel, B&B, etc) until the repairs are done. Call CAB or one of the links attached here or one of the numbers others have listed, but for goodness sake don't do nothing.

UncleRico-you are obviously a ******** without kids!

I would contact Health & Safety Department-you cannot be left without heating and presumably, hot water with 4 children. They will hopefully sort it quickly. Good luck.

Hmm i'm not completely particular what you're able to do approximately this. in case you're renting with the aid of a administration enterprise, they are getting paid plenty to look after the valuables for somebody (the owner), so as that they could be sorting this out. in case you do not pay the lease, it is that they who will chase you, not the owner of the flat. So in case you do not pay a million. they're going to could clarify to the flat proprietor why s/he isn't getting lease this month, and s/he will take their custom someplace else. 2. they're going to probable comprehend the regulation greater useful than the owner. So my advice is to pass to the voters advice too. those are communal issues you spot, and sorting them out takes relatively of time, as all of the vendors of all of the residences in the development could agree on the action to be taken. So it may not additionally be seen to be at as quickly as the administration enterprise or proprietor's fault - as all events could be asked. those administration agencies are entire scum, they're going to fleece you in case you're overdue paying lease, yet whilst something is going incorrect it takes them a while to do something approximately it.

The gas company should have a social policy regarding certain customers and seeing as you have children then you should be entitled to have boiler maintenance at a discount. You should contact them.
