The easiest way would be to check the recorded documents in your area. Usually this is done at the county courthouse, and the department you need is normally called something like "Register of Deeds". If you're unsure of the name of the office, I'd suggest calling a title company or the courthouse and asking (a title company will probably be quicker since it's a quick question). Some recorder's offices/Register of Deeds have the information available online, and some require you to head down to their office and dig through paper and microfiche (and yes, they are normally very helpful if you have to use their equipment). Some information that you will want to have on hand: The owner's name and the legal description of the property. All of these records should be recorded and indexed via those two pieces of information. If you do not know the properties legal description, you may have to check with the local taxing authority to get it. Unfortunately, real estate records do not use street addresses for very much. Hopefully this will help you out, good luck!

It amazes me that everyone want to go to an attorney for simple things they can do for themselves.

You can find out who owns a property by going to the county recorder's office with the property address as well as the legal address if you have it. You may also find out if the property is in foreclosure at the same office.

Another way is to look in your telephone book , find a title company call and see if they will fax you property profile or a deed showing ownership. You may ask if they have the property listed in foreclosure.

I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.
